UGC isn’t paid for, and its authenticity makes the user the brand advertiser as well. So, what is good User-Generated Content? 1. Wayfair

Wayfair is an online furniture store and it has a UGC campaign on instagram that let customers showcase the results of their online shopping items. Using the hashtag #WayfairAtHome, users can post their home setups featuring with Wayfair item.

Then, Wayfair reposts user’s UGC and provides a link so users can shop for the items featured in a real customer’s home. This is a fun campaign and it can help engage user shop and buy Wayfair products.

2. Burberry

Burberry has a UGC call Burberry’s Art of the Trench UGC campaign in 2009. This campaign is asked its loyal fans to upload pictures of themselves and their friends wearing the brand’s iconic trench coat and then they showcased on a dedicated microsite and their Facebook page.

UGC is very successful and it can help companies promote their products effectively. Also. its authenticity that in a study run by Cohn & Wolfe, 63% of consumers said they would rather buy from a company they consider to be authentic over a competitor. Moreover, most of the UGC are post by customers that they may more convictive. Is Dove social media marketing failing?

In my last post, I discussed good example of using social media marketing. Today, I’m going to talk about failure example, which is Dove.

Dove is a personal care brand that known for empowering women and focusing on natural, realistic standards of beauty. However, it took a big mistake in social media marketing in 2017. What did Dove do in 2017?

In 2017, Dove posted an advertising in FaceBook page and this adverting was criticised as “racist” for showing a black woman removes her brown shirt and underneath is a white woman with light shirt. Many social media users think that it evoked a long-running racist trope in Dove soap advertising: a “dirty” black person cleansed into whiteness. This advertising doesn’t fit brand message and made many customers angry and uncomfortable.

A make-up artist shared screenshots on her Facebook page and share two videos about this advertising.

Goodmorning America Interview: https://www.facebook.com/naythemua/videos/1665331593517198/

RESPONSE FROM DOVE:  https://www.facebook.com/naythemua/posts/1662337033816654

Also, this advertising attracted criticism on social media even create #BoycottDove hashtags in Twitter.

Although Dove removed the advertisement in FaceBook page later and apologises for ‘racist’ advertisement in social media, it doesn’t do much that Dove still lost many customers because of this advertisement.

In this case, we can see that social media is very powerful and influential. Company should always reviews it content from different perspective and make sure that it fit brand message and doesn’t offend. Do you know any social media marketing failures? leave a comment below and let’s discuss together.
